I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool…

Last night was the biggest night in Country Music… the CMAs. I love the CMAs, we watch every year start to finish.  I was so happy to see Barbara Mandrell was added to the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Barbara Mandrell

I’ve been a Barbara fan for as long as I can remember.  In fact, her concert was the first concert I ever attended at the ripe old age of 7.  Yes, “I was country when country wasn’t cool.”

What was the first concert you ever attended?

  1. I, too love me some country music! I think my first concert was Conway Twitty, The Statler Brothers and the opening act was….Reba! Good Times!

  2. Barbara was my first concert also, but I think I was about 15 or so. Love her!

  3. I saw hat and was happy for her. Martina my favorite is the one to pay tribute to her. Loved it.

  4. very first was alabama and john michael montgomery opened for him. i was in 9th grade. now my second concert, bryan adams and mr big opened for him. talk about a contrast! i love love love country music and thought the show last night was just fantastic. how about that taylor swift nearly jumping out of her dress each time she won. can you say Exciting! but the last of the night stole me away — Kenny and Dave… love. them. both.

  5. Shaun Cassidy when I was in 6th grade or so. Saved some tape from the sign he ran through to start the concert forever. Blast from the past!

  6. I grew up listening to Barbara Mandrell and was thrilled to see her on last night’s show. I think she was truly humbled and shocked to see George Strait singing her song.

  7. The Eagles with ELO as the warm up. This was not the reunion concert…this was an original. Obviously I’m old. They were awesome btw.

  8. This is going to sound really sad… my first concert was a Carman one! lol

  9. John Michael Montgomery. I won the tickets on a radio contest.

  10. Oh goodness, I can’t even remember and I’m only 25 years old… Isn’t that sad Brandi??? haha!!!

    I loved the CMA’s!!!! :)

  11. I’m totally revealing my (young) age here. . . N’SYNC was my first concert! My dad worked for Phillips, who owned the Phillips Arena in Atlanta and he got box seats for me and a friend and himself.

I’m not counting the summer concerts at the theme parks because this was my first “real” concert. My Dad totally gets props for driving us to Atlanta and then attending a NSYNC concert without complaining!

  12. i got railed at the Youth Leader Retreat for saying this…but it was Sandi Patty in Memphis

  13. First “real” concert was Hootie & The Blowfish back when I was 18 (they were the closing act for Alive at Five), and then went to go see The Goo Goo Dolls the following March. I guess that just goes to show how young I really am.

  14. my first concert was new kids on the block when I was in 6th grade. i think it was the greatest day of my life up to that point. haha! fortunately I’ve been to some “better” ones since then.

  15. Hank Williams Jr. when I was 18. I didn’t like Hank but I liked the boy I was with. ha!

  16. Country has always been cool!

    First Country Concert?
Don Williams, Charlie Pride, and the Oakridge Boys in Branson Missouri.

My parents always drug me to Southern Gospel concerts, but I don’t think those count as “concerts” – more like church on steroids :-)

  17. I love the CMA’s and country music.

I’m pretty sure my first concert was New Kids on the Block. :) Ha!

  18. She was the only part of the CMA’s that I saw last night and I immediately thought of you. I also used to watch the Barbara Mandrell show growing up and loved all three of them!
My first concert was the Statler Brothers – Reba opened up for them – I must have been around 7 years old. I remember when Reba was singing some “older men” behind me yelling to “move up the stage!” so they could see her better. To my young years it seemed scandalous! :) I still love Reba and LOVE to belt out “Fancy” when I’m alone! :)

  19. Billy Ray Cyrus. I was like 12…..

  20. My family loved to watch The Mandrell Sisters I remember watching a show they had every week as a kid. My first concert was Diamond Rio I love their sound.

  21. Reba – I was 14, she is my favorite!

  22. New Kids on the Block opening for Tiffany. When I was 5. It was awesome!!

  23. Bryan Adams. It was the summer of 69. No, not really, I wasn’t born yet, but that was a great song!!! Oh, and for the record, I went to high school in Hendersonville with Barbara Mandrell’s son Matt.

  24. I was probably 9 or 10 when I attended a Don Williams concert with my parents.

  25. Man you just brought back memories! I went to some BARBARA MANDRELL concerts when I was little and loved them! John Denver was my first concert though when I was 5.

  26. Menudo! Yeah baby!

  27. can’t remember, but was actually at the CMA’s last night to see it… love martina and george, but sugarland is my favorite! i think my first concert was garth brooks actually.. not really into him..

  28. OK!! I bet no one that frequents your blog will have the slightest idea who this is, but my 1st concert was . . .

“The Raspberries” in the early 70’s:)

  29. my first concert was the Judds :)

  30. I’ve been to a huge range of concerts from Alabama to Billy Idol and Michael W.Smith to Skillet and everything in between…my 1st concert was Styx when I was about 16.

  31. My whole family went to Whitney Houston when I was in junior high… I have the weirdest concert list:

    1. Whitney Houston
    2. Def Leppard
    3. Amy Grant
    4. Elton John
    5. Lillith Fair

Obviously they were just random opportunities where someone had a ticket for me :)

  32. Oh my word, these comments are making me laugh!

    Menudo, that’s awesome!

and Jamie, I wanted to be a Judd growing up!

  33. Rick Springfield.

    Oh yeah.

  34. Alabama

  35. I remember that concert well and how much fun we had. Do you remember it was just before Jeremy’s birthday and we bought him that riding green tractor for his birthday before we came home that night and he called it his “Barbara Mandrell tractor”? Oh what wonderful memories….

  36. Brandi .. you totally stole your own idea before I was able to steal it from you … with all due credit of course. You may be seeing this tomorrow! :)

My first concert was Barry Manilow when I was in 3rd grade. I remember my mom crying … they are big Fanilows. Saw his concert here in Vegas recently and everything. I remember also dancing to Copacabana.

  37. My first crush was George Strait… my dad took me to my first concert to see George and surprised me by getting us backstage to meet him!!! Looking back I think my dad wanted to meet him even more than I did :)

  38. Soul sister all the way. And my first concert was with Lou Rawls. Bet you young folks don’t even know who that is, so I’m including a link. :) Gee, I feel old now! LOL

    http://www.lourawls.com/

  39. First concert was The Hooters and Loverboy when I was 12. I was a fan of The Hooters (still am) and couldn’t have cared less about Loverboy.

  40. My First Concert – I was 20!!! I wasnt allowed to go to such things growing up :p I was about 7 months pregnant and I went and saw Kenny Chesney!

I took my 10 year old daughter last month to see Taylor Swift. It was a great concert and I was glad I could share her first concert with her! :)

  41. I saw Carpenters at the age of 7-8 I cannot remember which, I was wearing polka dots and had gloves on. They brought me too see her backstage and she touched me and talked to me.. She was a beautiful lady in person.

Wow.. those memories just flooded back!

  42. If I remember right, my first concert was with Ricky Van Shelton, The Judds, and Randy Travis. I may have been to a 2nd concert and may be mixing some of the acts–because I’m sure I remember Barbara Mandrell too…uh…or maybe it was Tammy Wynette. LOL–oh, how the memory is fogging

  43. Okay, I will really date myself. My first concert was the Dave Clark Five back in 1965 or so. I am guessing most younger folks won’t know who that group was but they were awesome.
I watched the CMAs for the first time ever last night. I am getting to be so country :)

  44. Girl, ever heard of Freddy Fender or Sha-na-na – yes the band from the movie Grease? One of them was my first concert, I had to be like five. I remember, I liked the bald guy from Sha-na-na, weird for a little girl right? And we went afterwards to get our programs signed and he kissed me on the cheek – just like your son and Taylor Swift! :P

  45. My first concert was Bell Biv Devoe….Now ya know! I still love to go back and listen to some of the music just for kicks. My first country concert was Reba — it was an amazing show!

I never saw Barbara Mandrell, but she was my favorite guest on Hee Haw! :)

  46. I LOVE country. My first concert EVER was Wango Tango (through radio station Kiis FM here in Los Angeles). Next was Britney Spears. I am not ashamed to admit that either. heeeeee!

  47. When I was about 8 or 9 I clogged on the Grand Ole’ Opry and I remember seeing Johnny Cash/Ricky Scaggs and several others. I didn’t embrace who I was watching! My first REAL concert lol was NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK:) 8 th grade…they were the loves of my life:) hahaha

  48. I’m not proud of this but my first concert was Def Lepard my freshman year of high school. I had never heard of them before but a friend asked me to go and I just really wanted to go to a concert!

  49. John Michael Montgomery when I was 15. I got to see Garth Brooks when I was 19. The girl next door got dumped by her boyfriend the day of the Garth concert so she had an extra ticket. She wanted to give both the tickets to me but my dad said I should bring her. It wasn’t a date I just really wanted to see Garth.

Then when I was working at Target in Tulsa, OK. Garth and Trisha were shopping. Back in the day it was impossible to get one of his tickets now it’s possible to see him in women’s clothing.

  50. Like someone else said above, my first concert was Rick Springfield in 1982, I think it was. Next…front row for Motley Crue just a year later. Haha…big contrast there!

And whoever it was above that got to meet Karen Carpenter – awesome!

  51. Rick Springfield in the 80’s…My sisters and I went with our cousin in Nashville…and we all got a t-shirt to prove it. And I’m quite sure we all had mullets to match Rick’s.

  52. My first concert was probably something Southern Gospel, because that’s all my parents listened to other than John Denver. But the first concert I *remember* was to see the now defunct Christian boy band, Plus One. Oh, to be 14 again.

  53. My first concert was Bride. Anyone remember them? Second real concert was Metallica, Suicidal Tendancies and Candlebox. I remember being REALLY mad that I had to lsten to Candlebox because Alice in Chains was supposed to be the second act, but Layne Staley had checked into rehab the week before for the 50th or so time.

But I loved the Barbara Mandrell Show growing up in the 80’s. I had a crush on that fiddle-playin’ Irlene.

  54. I’ll have to dig deep to think of my ‘first’??
Love Barbara as well though and we played one of her songs at my Mother’s funeral, “I’ll leave something good behind”. My Mom had asked us if we’d play this if something happened to her and even though we had our work cut out for us to find it under difficult circumstances, we did! There were many people there blessed by this song, especially her children. Miss her….
    Blessings today and always,
    Kaye
