It’s Cold… Period!

My dear husband is making fun of me today over at his blog.  He’s making fun of me because I mentioned I wanted a snuggie or slanket.

But can you blame me… check out our thermostat.

2-1Yes, it say 65*.  At least he usually builds me one of these…

2

So if I stay in our family room I’m warm.  Leave that room I’m living the life of an Eskimo.

Maybe he’s really trying to force me into cuddling with him on the couch… there’s a thought!  I know how much he enjoys a good cuddle (written with intense sarcasm).

Informal poll… what do you keep your thermostat set on in dead of winter??

Responses

  1. Since we’ve had our son we usually keep it at 65 during the day and 62 when we sleep (used to be 60). But we just got our heat bill yesterday which always sets me to worrying this time of year so yesterday I dropped it down to 63 and put on an extra layer. Probably won’t keep that up, though. It’s not fun to have a cold nose, cold hands, and cold feet throughout the day.

  2. If someone is home, 70 during the day. 62 at night. Bring on the electric blanket!! Currently, it is -16 with a -41 windchill here… :)

  3. 70 during the day & 65 at night.

    It’s currently 4* here

  4. A toasty 73-74!
    Somethings are worth paying for!
I shop off clearance racks and cut coupons so I enjoy this luxury!

Pete Wilson should be locked out in the cold!

  5. It’s set at 70 all the time. Never thought about setting it any lower at night. Maybe I should try it. I thought leaving it at a constant would be best-who knows.

  6. I started not to include my philosophy but I think I will. I want to be comfortable no matter the time of year. I really don’t think that when I am old and gray that I will be pulling out all of my old electric bills to calculate how much I saved over my lifetime. I am NOT knocking anyone who loves to save energy and money nor am I suggesting you don’t like to be comfortable. I do try to watch other things like the number of lights left on and things plugged in, just not my heating and cooling!

  7. We keep ours right around 70. All the time. And, I still feel like our house is cold.

  8. 75. And it’s getting pricey. We’re looking for things to sell.

  9. 70 and if I had it my way it would be WAYYYYY higher!!!!!!!!!! He puts up a fight with the 70. What is with these men?!

Our temp outside here today is -4 and that is the high.

  10. Amy keeps it at 63 here! I try to bump it up to 64/65 when she’s not looking…

  11. This is an ongoing debate at our house! Kevin would keep it at 70 all winter long, but I typically win unless it is below zero outside. We have it at 65 during the day and 63 at night. Everyone fusses, but I just tell them to put on a sweatshirt. :-)

  12. We keep ours around 72 all the time. But if I get up and it’s cold then I jack it up to 76 so that the heater will come on.

And that’s because it’s only in the 40’s at night and the 60’s during the day.

  13. OK… I have to admit that Nashville is down right cold today. 20 degrees…You get the award for going out and running errands in 20 degree weather. :)

So I live by Clear Lake and Galveston Bay so our winters are pretty mild with a blast of cold that usually only lasts 2 days and then it warms back up. However, this winter has been bizarre as we had 1-3 inches of snow at the first of December, then at Christmas we seriously had 65-mid 70 degree weather, and now this whole week we are experiencing some very cold, frosty mornings for us South Texans.
I turn my thermostat off during the day in the winter as its usually 50-60 degree weather so it never really has to kick on.
At night, we turn it down to 67.
So, you are down right super woman to keep it at 65 for the 20 degree chill.

  14. If we are home, the thermostat is set for 65. If we are away and at night, it’s set for 62. I used to keep it very warm but the kids were sick all the time. Now they’re too cold to get sick!!:)

  15. It stays around 70 in our house. Sometimes a little lower in the day, because we get so much sunshine that the family room gets really warm in the afternoons.

  16. 70 winter and 72 summer……if he touches the thermostat…well lets just say “it’s war”

  17. We keep ours at 63 or 62, but the house stays around 60….it’s cold…but we can’t afford what we use already (the house just leaks the warm out). So we deal by putting on extra clothes and have space heaters. This morning it was 58 in the house and 32 outside….the next two mornings are going to be interesting.
    Enjoy the 65… =)

  18. 70 MOST OF THE TIME. 69 -WHEN WE LEAVE THE HOUSE. I CANNNOT IMAGINE BELOW 65. I WANDER HOW MUCH DIFFERENCE 5 DEGREES MAKES IN THE BILL; BECAUSE IF IT IS SIGNIFICANT I WILL BE TRYING IT.

  19. Usually 63-64 when we’re home, and 60 when we leave for the day (if we remember..we don’t have an electronic thermostat.) I guess if you’re from the north, it doesn’t seem so bad.

When we have guests over we’ll splurge and warm it up to 68. Or light a fire. Or both. We’re not heat tyrants, just cheap. :)

  20. We keep ours below 65, hovering right around 60. It’s cold, but we just layer up and I am always in my flannel pajama pants and slippers (and I can normally be found on the couch and under a blanket). We have gas heat and so much is wasted on our poorly insulated house – so we just suffer and dream about the summer when the house stays too warm.

  21. We’re at 65 around here too. It’s more for saving money than for comfort, but we usually do manage to stay *pretty* warm. The kids try to run around the house in summer clothes and it drives me nuts cause I’m in my robe!

I just have to say that it is so cute that you and Pete always manage to post around the same time. I have a rotating blogroll, and your posts are stacked together almost everyday!;)

  22. I’m VERY cold natured so our’s is set on 70. It gets a little colder downstairs so we will light the fireplace while we are down there. When we were living in our last apartment, it was always set between 74 and 78. Our bills were ridiculous! We had an electric thermostat when we lived in Chattanooga and it as definitely a money saver. We could set it for 4 different temps and times so the house would be pleasant when we got home. I need to invest of one of those again.

  23. Ours is set at 70-72 when we are home. My husband is a heating & cooling guy and he has to work outside a lot so he likes it hot when he is there. When were not there it is 64 and at night it is 68. But you also have to realize that as I type this the actual temperature outside is -17. Thats’s right, NEGATIVE 17!! All the schools were cancelled because the wind chill is like -39 or something ridiculous like that. But after today the temps are supposed to rise to a balmy 30 something, at least we have that to look forward too!

  24. We generally have ours set somewhere between 67 (my hubby wants it there) and 69 (where I want it). Actually, I’d like it to be around 70-72, but there is the whole issue of having to pay the heating bill, so I leave it low. I wear warm clothes (ok, often fleece pajama pants) around the house. And, when I have a chance to sit down and relax, I have a Snuggie! You should definitely get one!

  25. I keep ours at 63-64 degrees……AND…..just for the record…..

It is was -14 degrees last night and with the wind chill factor we had a feel like temp of -25.

    It’s a little chilly here.

  26. We keep ours set at 67 year round but no one is home during the day. As soon as I get home at night I put on my “old lady” robe, and it probably ranks right up there next to the snuggie on the sexy charts. :)

  27. Last night my Husband had the down stairs at 80 degrees and the upstairs at 74. I cant believe yours was at 65 what is pete thinking thats just wrong!! You get yourself a slanket and get him one too!!

  28. 70 during daytime…and I’m still in my warm sweats downstairs, 63 at night and under some really warm covers! I stay bundled and hubs is usually sweating!!! It’s just not fair!

  29. I e-mailed Pete I told him to get you a snuggie I have one and I love it he would like it too They are wonderful

  30. In winter, when it’s just me and the kiddos home I am all about the 60-64 range…I am happy to wear a sweatshirt and socks…but when my hubby gets home, and he has been working outside since 4:30 am…he jacks it up to atleast 70.
Same is true during the horrid summer…I keep it on about 78 but as soon as he gets home he cranks it down to about 72.

Oh, and by the way I DO LOVE pearbudget.com…finally a online system that works for me…here is to a great, balanced 2009

    April

  31. Pete should be ashamed of himself!! He’s freezing you out! We keep ours set at around 71-72 when we’re home, and 68 when we’re not and also at night. We also have a corn burning fireplace that we keep set at 75 when we’re home! I don’t know how you do it … I’d be setting up that thermostat myself!

  32. 68 and sometimes bump it up to 70 when it drops to the teens at night!

  33. For the first time in 6 years, I am spending a winter without being pregnant or breastfeeding … so it’s my first non-hormonal winter in years! And I’m freezing! I seemed to have gotten rid of most of my sweaters during those hot-flash winters, so now I’m paying the price … for a thermostat set at 73-degrees … night and day! I love to sleep in colder temps, but the truth is that the upstairs of our house is downright c-o-l-d and drafty. And the thermostat is downstairs. So if I set it to 65 it ends up being more like 60 or less upstairs at night. Brrrrrr! (and yes, I sleep in flannel pants, a sweatshirt, and slipper socks, much to my hubby’s delight : )

  36. Ours is on 68, day and night. And our gas bill is waaay too high. And I’m still cold. Wish I could set it on 80 and forget it.

Summer, I keep it on 78 and I occasionally get cold and turn it to 80. I do not like air conditioned air very much but in Alabama, we need it.

  37. Bless your heart I bet you are freezing!!! I keep my heat around 70ish during the day but cut it down a degree or two at night.

  38. We set ours on 72 during the day and 74 at night. It’s freezing in Ohio right now…wind chill way below 0….our house has breezy spots near the windows that makes it cold! We have it set high to make it warmer. We also use space heaters at night!

  39. In Houston, our heat doesn’t even kick on but maybe 10 days out of the year. Right now it is the coldest night of the winter so far (lows in 20s, highs in the 50s). I keep it on 72 when we are home, day or night. Our kids kick the blankets off, so I fear going any lower (my husband has it programmed for 65 when we aren’t home). Very few times I am thankful for yucky Houston weather, but today you have made me thankful for it!

  40. We have loads of covers and at night we don’t like to breathe heated air! So at night we leave it on 58!!! But during the day, since I just had my little pups shaved they are shivering even with little sweaters, so I have it set on 71* ~
I can’t help it, I have naked dogs!!!
    Snuggle in today Sweetie!

  41. So I am totally siding with you, because after all, he was the one to set your hair on fire…now this. Right? Right…but for us, I have yet to even see a thermostat in any of the houses here…so I don’t even think I can answer your question. There isn’t central heating or air…we all just open windows or build fires – depending on the hot or cold (because it is basically Summer all year) it only drops to maybe 6o-65ish…so I feel you Brandi…I feel you :)

  42. As far as the temp goes…I am TEAM BRANDI

As far as the Snuggie discussion… I am TEAM PETE

    (those things are TERRIBLE)

  43. I’m on your side even if I do happen to be your husband’s mother. We keep our heat on 68 in the daytime. I have considered getting a snuggle myself since I’m always cold unless we have a fire burning. You can put it on your Christmas list for next year if you can make it through this winter!

  44. I don’t know what fahrenheit is, but as someone who may possibly be a cold-blooded reptile and hates the cold (good thing I live in Scotland then….lol) I’m probably Team Brandi on this one!!

  45. I’ve already informed your man on his blog today he needs to bump it up to 70! Seriously….I’m a very warm blooded freak of nature…..i rarely wear jackets in the dead of winter..etc…and even I find comfort at 70 degrees. Poor thing….you and those poor babies must be nearly frost-bitten!

  46. Personally I would like it really like it at 75 degrees but my husband seems to think that if it goes 70 and above he is going to melt or hyperventilate. And he gets all dramatic about it.

And I want the Snugglie too…I think that is genius!

  47. We typically keep it at 68, but today I am trying to get rolls to rise so I have bumped it up a bit.

  48. I keep it around 63 during the winter when we’re home. I find this quite comfortable. I can always warm up by putting on more clothes, running a space heater or having a hot flash.

We run the AC on 77 during the summer and turn on the ceiling fans. I usually don’t have to turn on the AC until early June and then turn it off in September. It never gets much hotter than 95 degrees outside during the summer here in NW Ark.

  49. We keep it at 68 – 70 and I still need extra blankets! I can’t stand being cold but pretty much am most of the time.

  50. 70. My husband freezes and I burn up. You know, you can make a throw into a snuggie pretty easily. You can even make it convertible by using velcro (like my Burger King sleeping bag). Or you could get one of those polyester robes that looks all fuzzy like fleece. They are SO stinking warm (and soft, too). I borrowed my daughter’s and had to get it off before I turned into a puddle. It would go great with your p.j.s, you know.

  51. We usually set ours on 68…our house is older, so it feels chilly even then…thank God for blankets!

  52. 70/71. I am way too cold with it any lower. I could never make it in the north. :)

  53. Ok, so I have read through the comments and I might scare people here – we keep ours set at 58 during the day and drop it to 50 at night (although we do have space heaters in the 2 bedrooms that we keep at 62 at night…funny we sleep with our rooms warmer than we live with them during the day!) Our temps usually range from 0 to 30*F, we live in an old house with VERY little insulation, and our heating bills are still around $200 a month! Oh, summer, where are you?

  54. Your husbands post was really funny. I have had my thermostat set to 66 most of the winter, but THIS WEEK…that puppy is workin’ it at 68-69.

I am FREEZING right now, so off to work out to get a little warmth goin

  55. We don’t have to use it very much here. But we set our thermostat at 72 year round. That really stinks when it is 115 in the summer. At night, we turn the downstairs unit off and just let the upstairs run. It works out. But even at 72, I’m usually still under a blanket. I’ve wanted one of those snuggies too, even though they look ridiculous!

  56. It’s set on 2COLD!

  57. Brandi, We keep our house at 70…it’s a compromise By the way, here’s a copy of the comment I left on Pete’s blog:

I was blessed with my own sage green snuggie for my birthday a couple of weeks ago and I am in love. Yes, I realize that it is essentially a backwards robe, but, it is longer, so it covers my feet and it’s perfect for laying on the couch. The kiddos love to cuddle under it and watch TV with me and don’t think I haven’t caught hubs stretched out in his recliner all snugged up! Don’t forget the free book light that comes with it..so cool! and the special right now is BOGO (buy obe, get one)…how could you pass on this!
Give in Pete……the snuggie is here and it’s calling for you!

  58. 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Depending on democratic consensus we may raise or lower the temperature. The cost of running your thermostat is about 3% of your bill for every degree you go up [cite]. The snuggie may save Pete money.

  59. You’d die in my house…no joke no lie…ours goes to 58 at night.

  60. I live in Minnesota, and it’s crazy cold here today. However, we keep our thermostat (which is in our hallway) set at 68. It’s definitely colder in other parts of our house, though. For instance, our entryway is cold enough to keep my Frappuccinos as chilled as if they’d been in the fridge! :)
I have to admit, though, that I would not wear a Snuggie. Sorry. I have been known to wrap blankets around myself, though. :)

  61. It’s freakin’ cold in our house, too. I think I’ll be investing in one of these snuggies, too. HOT MAMA…I will be!

I’ll be hopping over to Pete’s to comment, too! : )

  62. Right now, Main Man is wearing t-shirt and shorts. I am wearing sweat pants, t-shirt, and hoodie. He’s barefoot, and I have fuzzy slippers, and I think our thermostat is set at 70. I don’t function at 65.

  63. Ours stays on 68. The upstairs stays nice and toasty so I can go up there if I really get cold. For the most part our house stays warm. I’m so cold natured that today has about killed me. I CANNOT get warm. I’ll just climb in my coffee cup.

  64. While I do think the snuggie would make you look like the Apostle Brandi, I told Pete on his blog that 65* on the thermostat in the winter is TOTALLY different than 65* on the thermostat in the summer. Right now it is -42* windchill here, my thermostat is set at 68* and an ICE CHUNK was on my wall this morning. Literally. I’ll have to twitpic the aftermath later on twitter.

    Turn up your thermostat :)

  65. Turn the heat up….Who cares what hubbie wants….Im sure hes in a 70 degree office at work!!!

  66. Sorry going with Pete on this one keep ours at 65-63 degrees I would love to see you in your new snuggie !

  67. 58*…. oh my goodness that’s CRAZY!!!! makes my 65* seem really warm! :)

  68. I commented over at your husband’s blog, something to the effect of he’s cruel and should turn up the heat. :)

In my home we don’t even set it that low when we are out of the house– 68 when no one is home and 70-72 when there is someone home. I wouldn’t let someone put it that low when I’m sleeping, Brandi. Much less when I am awake!

  69. currently its set at 70 and i’m debating turning it up to 75. its frigid in here!

  70. ours stays on 68, but if i get really cold during the day i’ll bump it up to 69 to knock the chill out.

  71. 69 during the day and 72 at night. our 7 month olds bedroom is at the front of the house with a big window so we don’t want him getting too cold at night.

  72. I like to keep the thermostat at around 78 degrees….my wife doesn’t wear as many clothes that way, I made the same suggestion to Pete…I call it the win/win climate strategy.

  73. HILARIOUS COMMENT BY JALACK!

  74. 72- 74 is about perfect for me! I just dont think the house should be cold! ours is always cold!!!

  75. 72-74! I have to be comfy!! :) But we do live in FL so the heat isn’t on too much. Our AC on the other hand…now thats where our cost is!

  76. With -42 wind chill here tonight, I say turn up the heat AND get a snuggie. Let people talk smack about how ugly they are, whatever. Only danger I see with you having one is catching the sleeves on fire while stir-frying. I just wish they made them down-filled. And a monogram would be sweeeet.

  77. 67, 68 when brents home.

    70 when hes not.

i send him on lots of errands!

  78. 73!!

  79. 72 and Im still cold!

  80. p.s. Pete is a mean mean man!

  81. Four words: Heated blanket from Target. On sale for as low as 29.99. I am cuddled under it as I type.

Best part? The queen size has two controls. One side for you and one for Pete.

  82. Hrmmm – must be a northern thing to wear a scarf for warmth rather then fashion. Even indoors and on dates!

Yes – our house is also set at 65. And yes – the fire is usually roaring. BUT…when it’s not…I wear one of my many wonderful scarves inside as well as one my many wonderful fleece or down vests. All for warmth!

Funny how items of functionality can turn to items of fashion!

Came over to visit from Angie – and love all I’ve read on your blog thus far!

    ~Kate

  83. At a very comfortable 70 degrees. I’m sad for you! That is chilly!

  84. We keep it cold at our house too…and thankfully we have crazy good insulation because we actually have been leaving the heat turned off altogether and it is in the 20s and 30s here in Okie-homa…we just bundle up a little bit, but it actually is still warm in here!

  85. We keep it at 64 degrees all the way up here in Rochester, NY. Let’s just say frequently I am wearing a coat in our house.

  86. We must be crazy: 62 during the day and 55 at night. This is in Minneapolis, home to almost 3 days of -20 degrees last week. When it gets that cold, no temperature feels warm, so it’s best to bundle up and find a coffee shop with a fireplace.
(Please note these are pre-baby temperatures. I’m sure next winter will see a higher thermostat setting. :) )

  87. 68 degrees day and night on heat.
Of course, this is central Texas and we are still having some 70 degree days. It is usually colder inside the house than outside.

  88. I am here from Angie’s blog… love her!! We don’t set ours… we use a wood stove so it varies. I just try to keep it going all day and keep it warm enough not to have to wear a coat. If it starts getting chilly I just another log. The house is really really old and isn’t insulated and happens to be in Indiana where it has been really cold this winter. The advantage is that it doesn’t cost anything but the down side is that only certain rooms are warm. Our bedroom and the only bathroom are NOT included in the warm rooms!!! I keep a small heater in the bathroom but don’t run it all the time and we sleep with down comforters which are really, really warm!!

  89. Hi Brandi! I got here via Angie’s blog. I’m not a big responder usually but had to here. We are missionaries living Nagano, Japan – home of the ‘98 Winter Olympics. As a rule, homes here have NO central heat or air, and no insulation to speak of. We use kerosene heaters, and only in the room currently being occupied, and never at night when you sleep – throw on another blanket! Walk out of the room with the heater and you might as well be going outside. have the urge to pee in the middle of the night?! Better make it fast or you’re frozen by the time you get back under the covers!! The only semblance of heat in the bathroom is when you have the hot water on to shower – oh! and the toilet seat!!!! The only saving grace! Heated toilet seats are such a blessing! Most mornings when we wake it’s only a few degrees warmer inside our house than outside until we get the heaters fired up. Last Friday I went in to take my shower and the floor of the shower was layered in ICE!!!
So, from where I am, 65*F is like a heat wave!!!
Of course – come summertime – 65* will sound like the dead of winter ;-} Ah well…..

  90. After hearing that you all had it at 65 I can no longer complain about 70!

  91. Last winter we kept the thermostat set at 58, closer to 60 if we felt like we had a few pennies to spare. I was ALWAYS cold, wore two pairs of sweats, and couldn’t feel my hands. Doing anything other than sitting on the couch under a blanket was miserable!

We remedied the situation by putting in a wood burning furnace this fall. It’s absolutely wonderful! Well, my husband just has to do a little extra work – cutting and hauling the wood. I’m just lucky to have such a nice husband!

No more 58 for us – now it’s as warm as we want! Definetly worth the investment!
